Total Dhamaal – Review

I had gone to Goa for a week where I caught up with my old schoolmates after 6 years. The first evening we met we had cocktails and seafood by the ocean and enjoyed while catching up with old times. The next day, I wanted to go for a movie in the cinema hall where I watched 99% of all the movies that I have seen in my school days.

I am not a big fan of Slapstick comedy, especially Bollywood, but the only movie on was ‘Total Dhaamal’. So, we had no other choice but to watch it. There started my journey to immense regret over wasting 2.5 hours of my life!!!

The Story

The basic crux of the story is that a trio of thieves steal a massive amount of money (how much? I can’t remember) from an illegal deal between a police officer and some don. But, one of the trio backstabs the group and runs away with the money. Then out of nowhere, Sonakshi Sinha comes in for a sexy item number. Then that person who backstabbed the group is confronted by the rest of his group in the same club so he escapes on an airplane which then crashes and he dies. But, not before the other 3 main pairs of the movie comes across the dying man who then told them where he has stashed the money and gives them a set of clues to find it. This begins a race for the money and the rest of the movie is basically about this journey.

This is a very dumbed down version of the story…. But honestly, I don’t know how else to describe it.

To Watch or not to watch?

I really am racking my brain to find something good with this movie but I am blank. Except for the divorce scene in court between Bindu Patel (Madhuri Dixit) and Avinash Patel (Anil Kapoor), I found nothing worthwhile or memorable about the films or the dialogues.

The characters were randomly brought in to the scenes with no connection with each other. The characters, according to me, didn’t have much chemistry between them either. The dialogues were funny at times but mostly they ridiculous and stupid. There were some scenes with VFX which were horribly obvious and not at all up to standard. I think the only thing that carried the movie was the remarkable set of actors it had in it. The yester year comedy stars like Javed Jaffrey, Boman Irani, Jhonny Lever and of course the Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor, they really played their characters really well despite their characters having no substance.

It was unnecessarily long and could have easily have ended an hour earlier. The saddest thing for me was that except for Madhuri Dixit, who was also only present as a wife, there were no other strong female characters. I would have really commended the movie makers if they would have introduced one pair or duo made of just female characters who were in the race for the money. Even Prachi (Esha Gupta), who was brought in at the end, barely had any screen time and was only used as eye-candy and had no substantive role.

Ironically, I had gone to see this movie with quite high hopes despite it not being my style of movies because I had seen some trailers on television which seemed hilarious. But the movie was an utter disappoint.

Overall, I have to say that the movie was a big flop in my eyes and I would never recommend anyone to watch this movie, not if you want to save your brain cells from rotting.
